Project Lead the Way (PLTW)
Project Lead the Way at SMS
At our middle school, we believe in giving students the tools to wonder, discover, and build the future. That’s why we are proud to offer PLTW Gateway, a premier STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) program designed specifically for middle school minds.
PLTW Gateway isn't about memorizing facts from a textbook—it’s about jumping headfirst into hands-on, real-world challenges. Through collaborative, project-based learning, our students don't just learn about science and technology; they step into the shoes of engineers, computer scientists, and medical researchers. They learn how to think critically, embrace trial and error, and solve complex problems.
Here are the exciting pathways your student can explore:
- Design & Modeling: Students discover the design process, learning how to take an idea from a rough sketch to a 3D digital model. They use professional design software and ultimately bring their creations to life by building physical prototypes to solve real-world problems.
- Flight & Space: The sky is definitely not the limit here. Students explore the physics of atmospheric flight and space travel. They design, build, and test airfoils and propulsion systems, traveling through the history of aerospace and looking ahead to the future of space exploration.
- Computer Science for Innovators & Makers: Students step outside the screen to see how computer science impacts the physical world. They learn to program microcontrollers and connect them to physical sensors and outputs, blending coding with hands-on building to create interactive, smart devices.
- App Creators: In a world run by mobile technology, our students learn how to build it. This course introduces them to computer science principles by empowering them to design and customize their own mobile apps, moving them from tech consumers to tech creators.
- Medical Detectives: Students play the role of real-life health scientists to solve medical mysteries. They measure and interpret vital signs, investigate nervous system functions, dissect organs to understand anatomy, and track down the culprits behind foodborne illness outbreaks using forensic biology.
Through these courses, our students discover hidden passions, build foundational technical skills, and develop the creative confidence to tackle any challenge that comes their way!
